This hat of wine-red velvet, stitched with a flat, straight crown and an upturned brim adorned with bows on either side, was created by Rose Descat. The repetitive stitching is what gets me; it’s like a meditation, a kind of drawing in thread, a rhythmic process, similar to the layering in my own painting. The deep pile of the velvet gives the hat a rich, tactile presence. You can almost feel the softness between your fingers. The wine-red color is intense, both luxurious and earthy at once. What’s intriguing is the way the texture catches the light, creating subtle shifts in tone across the surface. If you look closely at the concentric circles on top, you see a spiral, like thoughts turning in on themselves. It reminds me a bit of the obsessive mark-making of Agnes Martin, but here, instead of paint, it’s all about the fabric. Art’s always a conversation, right? Always borrowing, always riffing. It's not about fixed answers, but about keeping the questions alive.
