This calendar page for March, by Anna Sipkema, is an intriguing blend of graphic design and illustration. The color palette is restrained, almost muted, relying on soft reds, greens, and grays, which immediately sets a calm, methodical tone. The texture of the piece isn't overtly tactile but the interplay between the flat blocks of color and the delicate floral motifs suggests a process of layering and building up of imagery. The rhythmic repetition of floral shapes and the Art Nouveau-ish tendrils create an interesting tension, like a dance between structure and ornamentation. Look at how the simplified forms of the flowers contrast with the more detailed rendering of the leaves. It’s this kind of deliberate yet playful approach to mark-making that makes Sipkema’s work so engaging. It reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint and her use of graphic motifs. Like Klint, Sipkema embraces ambiguity, inviting us to find our own connections within the work.
