This allegorical portrait of René Descartes was made by Nicolas Ponce in France. Although undated, Ponce was active throughout the second half of the 18th century, a time when intellectuals like Descartes were looked to as national heroes. The portrait presents Descartes in an oval frame, surrounded by symbolic images. The images allude to significant moments and ideas in Descartes' life and philosophical work. We see him in bed, presumably contemplating his famous dictum, "I think, therefore I am." The scenes around the portrait draw on the wider Neoclassical visual culture in France. They represent the rationalism of the Enlightenment, with its emphasis on reason, order, and clarity. The text below the image is also illuminating. It describes Descartes's major intellectual contributions. Historians of philosophy have looked at such images alongside texts to understand how intellectuals were celebrated by the institutions of their day. The allegorical portrait helped to construct Descartes's public image. It turned him into a symbol of French intellectual achievement.
