This is an anonymous design for a vestibule, made on paper with pen, black ink, and watercolor. The drawing illustrates the proposed decoration of a transitional space in a building. What's most remarkable is the way that the design envisions artisanal work on an architectural scale. Consider the vine-like motifs snaking across the ceiling, and the framed vignettes and symbolic creatures inhabiting the upper walls. These patterns and figures would have required the deft hands of skilled painters and plasterers. The design provides a glimpse into the labor-intensive processes needed to produce such spaces. Craft production was interwoven with social status, as wealthy patrons sought to display their taste and means through elaborate architectural features. It can be easy to overlook the intense labor and artistry required to create these kinds of spaces. But by appreciating the material and the making, we can better understand the social and cultural significance of this beautiful design.
