Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries made this frame for Elsevier's Illustrated Monthly Magazine with ink on paper. It is quite petite. Imagine him at his desk, bending over the page to get every detail just so. I can sense the artist’s careful hand in the unwavering line work and symmetrical design. It’s all so delicate and precise, the work of someone who really knows their craft. There is something so beautiful about the simplicity of the color palette. It makes me think about how much can be achieved with so little. It reminds me a bit of the graphic work of Hilma af Klint, another artist who had a knack for creating simple compositions that resonated with meaning. Artists are always in conversation with each other, learning and growing from what has come before. It is so important to remember that art is not just about what we see, but also about how it makes us feel. When we embrace ambiguity, we open ourselves up to new interpretations and possibilities.
