Harrie Gerritz made this print, Klein maanlicht avontuur, which translates to 'Small Moonlight Adventure', at some point during his career, but I can't tell you exactly when. I love how Gerritz simplifies the landscape, stacking shapes and colors like building blocks. The textures aren't really there in a tactile sense, but the colours create a certain flatness that makes me think about how we construct our own sense of depth. Check out the pink line going through the middle of the brown block. It's so delicate and unexpected, like a secret path only visible in the moonlight. It contrasts nicely with the simple shapes and blocks of colour, but also sort of pulls the whole scene together and creates a strange and wonderful harmony. You could compare this to work by someone like Josef Albers, with the blocks of colours creating depth. But, ultimately, this print embraces an ambiguity that leaves space for multiple interpretations.
