This is an anonymous facsimile of moon letters from 1493, depicting Count Bernhard of Meurs against Charles of Egmond, Duke of Guelders. At the time it was made, power struggles were a constant reality, shaping the lives and identities of the aristocracy. This document offers a glimpse into that world, capturing a moment of conflict and negotiation between powerful figures. Gendered expectations certainly played a role. Men were tasked with asserting dominance through leadership, while women often influenced politics through strategic marriages. How did these dynamics affect those who were excluded from positions of power? The artist gives us insight into the clothing, arms and architecture of the time. But it also leaves space for us to imagine the emotions and personal stories behind these historical figures, and question the dynamics of power that continue to shape our world.
