Johannes van Cuylenburgh created this landscape with wanderers on a country road sometime in the early 19th century. As part of the Romantic movement, van Cuylenburgh, like many artists of his time, turned to nature as a source of spiritual and emotional solace. Landscape paintings became popular as symbols of national identity. But, whose identity were these landscapes really reflecting? Here, two figures are seen on a path, dressed in the garb of the period. Do they represent the growing middle class, newly able to explore and appreciate the countryside? Are they landowners, whose wealth is derived from the very land depicted? This image invites us to consider the relationship between land, ownership, and identity. How do our perceptions of landscape reflect and reinforce societal structures and power dynamics? Take a moment and think about your own connection to the landscapes of your life.
