Curator: Looking at this untitled piece by Terry Winters, I’m struck by how he builds up form through what appears to be frantic lines. There's an urgency to his mark-making that almost vibrates off the page. Editor: The chaotic energy does feel quite palpable! My first thought was actually how Winters uses color here; I see these vibrant blocks almost acting as a form of protest against the rigid structure underneath. Curator: Oh, that's interesting! A protest, huh? I see it more as… layers of thought, maybe? Like, he's thinking through the composition as he's creating it. Editor: Perhaps. But I can’t help but think about how abstract expressionism, particularly in the post-war period, became a site for asserting individuality in the face of increasing conformity. It feels like Winters is tapping into that legacy. Curator: Hmm, that's a valid point. I suppose it's that tension between the micro and the macro, the individual and the collective. It’s something we all wrestle with, isn’t it? Editor: Exactly, and I think that's what makes it so compelling! Curator: Well said. It’s a journey into the self and back out again.
