These two vacation photos of the Van den Berg family in the Alps were taken by Frank Willem van den Berg, but we aren't sure exactly when. Each photo is like a quick sketch, a moment captured with light and shadow. In one, the strong shadow leads you down the street, and on the right, you get this feeling of trees reaching for the sun. I love how these pictures aren’t trying to be perfect, but it's exactly this that gives them their charm, their immediacy. Looking at the material quality, the paper has this soft, matte finish, absorbing the light. This makes them feel intimate, like holding a memory in your hands. The contrast isn’t super sharp, but what really grabs me is the way van den Berg played with composition. These photos remind me a little of the work of early 20th-century photographers, who were also experimenting with capturing fleeting moments and everyday scenes. It's a reminder that art is always in conversation, with each artist building on the ideas of those who came before. Isn't it cool how art lets us see the world in so many different ways?
