This is a collection of four photographs by Norbert van den Berg taken in 1949 and 1950, showing scenes in and around the Villa Floris. The composition is interesting, it feels like peering into someone’s personal scrapbook, like looking at family photos, only in this case the family is the artwork itself. The images have a stark contrast, a full range of greys, from almost pure white, to pitch black. It gives the images a sense of depth, drawing you into the scene. Take the top left image, for instance, the way the light catches the pillars, creating a rhythmic pattern with the shadows. This tension between light and dark creates a dialogue, like a call and response, not unlike the paintings of Giorgio de Chirico. That direct gaze, that feeling that the artwork has a life of its own, reminds me that art isn't just about what we see, but how we see it.
