Johan Christian Dahl painted this evocative landscape of Winter at the Sognefjord using oil on canvas. Dahl was fascinated by the natural world, and particularly with the dramatic landscapes of his native Norway. The subdued palette of browns, whites, and greys, applied with visible brushstrokes, creates a sense of cold and stillness. His focus was on the geological forms, and the effects of light and atmosphere on the scene. While this painting is representational, the artistic process involved careful observation, sketching and layering of paint, to evoke the feeling of a real place. Dahl’s paintings were very popular, especially among those who had not travelled and could only imagine these remote places. His paintings could be reproduced, and sold as commodities for decoration, education, and inspiration. Ultimately, Dahl's art challenges any rigid distinction between fine art and craft, showcasing the skills and sensibilities of both, and inviting us to consider the social context in which these works were produced and consumed.
