Blinky Palermo made "Graue Scheibe," or "Grey Disk," with paint, probably lots of it, layered up over time. I can imagine him, in his studio, circling this form, adding layer upon layer, a bit like frosting a cake, only it's grey. He’s building up this quiet, contemplative object. The edges are irregular, almost like a naturally formed shape. It’s so subtle, but the grey seems to hold a whole universe of shades. Palermo was part of a generation of artists who were thinking about what a painting could be, pushing beyond the traditional rectangle. It feels related to the work of other painters who were using simple forms and monochromatic palettes to explore the essence of painting. Artists are always in dialogue, borrowing and riffing off each other. There's something so powerful in this understated approach, a reminder that painting doesn’t always need to shout to be heard. It's an invitation to slow down, to really *look*, and to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
