This is a linen damask with a diamond pattern made by Chris Lebeau. Look closely at the surface—it’s all about texture, isn't it? You can almost feel the way the linen would have felt under your fingers as it was woven. The pattern itself is so regular, almost like a machine made it, but you know that it’s been woven by hand. I love the way that the repetitive nature of the design mimics the repetitive, meditative work of the weaver. I’m reminded of Anni Albers, another textile artist who explored the possibilities of weaving as a form of abstract art, but where Anni experimented with bold colours, this is restrained and elegant. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t have to shout to be heard; sometimes, the quietest voices are the most powerful.
