This is a steel furnishing fabric of linen damask with a diamond motif, by Chris Lebeau. You know, I think Chris was trying to make something that felt both solid and airy at the same time. I can see him there at the loom, carefully selecting each thread, trying to find the right balance. It looks so simple, just a repeating diamond pattern. But when you stare at it, these diamonds start to play tricks on your eyes. It makes me think about constructivism and how artists were trying to create a new visual language for a new era. It’s funny how one idea triggers the next. When I look at this pattern it reminds me of the work of Agnes Martin, with those subtle grids, and the way a simple gesture can have so much impact. Lebeau, Martin... they are all part of a conversation that stretches back through time. They make me want to get back to the studio, and start something new.
