This lithograph titled Zomermiddag (Summer Afternoon), was printed by D. Noothoven van Goor in Leyden as part of the “Prenten-Magazijn voor de Jeugd” (Print Magazine for the Youth). Made for children, this artwork is both a song book and a collection of images which seek to capture the essence of a summer afternoon. Representations of landscapes and domestic interiors are accompanied by verses of Dutch poetry. These verses describe children playing outdoors, resting beneath trees, and enjoying simple meals together. The arrangement of images and text reflect the values and pastimes cherished within the Dutch middle class. Consider how childhood is represented here, how social and gender roles are assumed in the various scenes. What does the artwork reveal about the period’s attitudes toward nature, family, and leisure?
