This black and white photograph entitled 'Fort Bocklemünd' by an anonymous artist captures a collection of snapshots on a page. There's something about the texture of the photograph itself, the way the images are placed, the grain, and the way they create a collage of different settings and atmospheres that catches the eye. I am drawn to the large collection of what appears to be heavy sandbags piled in the middle of the composition. The bags are casually stacked, creating an asymmetrical form. The black and white tones enhance the contrast, and the light hitting some of the forms makes them look sculptural. This approach reminds me of artists like Gerhard Richter, who experimented with photography and collage, using chance and process to create new relationships between images. Just as in painting there is a conversation between the artwork and the world, art is an ongoing dialogue across time. The way these photographs come together makes you think about how photographs can create a world of their own.
