Volker Seding made this image of Crabapples sometime before 2007. The first thing I notice is the almost comical expressions on some of the apples! They are like little characters, each with its own personality. I wonder what Seding was thinking as he arranged them; did he see them as individuals, too? The way they cluster together, yet remain distinct, reminds me of a crowd of people, each with their own story to tell. It's interesting how the black and white tones simplify the forms, making the textures and blemishes on the apples even more pronounced. Each mark tells a tale of growth, decay, and the passage of time. Looking at this reminds me of other artists who found beauty in the everyday, like Irving Penn with his photographs of mundane objects. These artists remind us that beauty can be found in the unexpected, and that even the simplest subjects can be profound.
