Joseph Cornell created 'Sand Fountain' using mixed media to construct a box, a world, really. I see the making of this piece as a journey into the absurd. The rough, collaged paper of the box contrasts with the smooth, deliberate pour of sand, it’s a dreamy process. There is a distinct texture, almost like cracked plaster, giving the piece an aged, otherworldly feel. The palette is muted – creams, yellows, and browns, which makes the whole thing feel like a forgotten relic. Look at the sand itself, almost unnaturally bright, creating a focal point. It’s as if Cornell is hinting at the preciousness of time, or perhaps, the lack of it. Thinking about other artists who worked with found objects and the idea of the assemblage, Kurt Schwitters comes to mind. Cornell is, in a way, having a conversation across time, exploring what it means to create meaning from fragments. 'Sand Fountain' isn't just a sculpture, it's a puzzle.
