About this artwork

Djege Coulibaly made this Skirt for a Married Woman, we don't know exactly when, but it looks like it was made with woven and dyed fabric. It’s so interesting how something made with such simple marks can be so captivating. The earthy palette gives it a feeling of being very grounded, yet the intricate patterns create a sense of movement and rhythm. Look at the way the dye seeps into the fabric, creating these soft, blurred edges. There is a grid like system on the left hand-side, and parallel horizontal lines across the middle. These elements gives you a sense of the hand, the care, and the time involved in its creation. You know, it makes me think of the work of the Gee’s Bend quilters, who also used simple materials and techniques to create these incredible works of art that speak to something deep and universal. It’s like art becomes a conversation, an exchange of ideas that transcends time and place. Anyway, that's just a thought, what does it make you think of?
