Alevtyna Kakhidze made this drawing in 2022 using what looks like pen on paper. It’s raw, immediate, like a page torn from a diary, full of thoughts spilling out. There’s text in Russian alongside an image of a rabbit emerging from a top hat. The lines are shaky, unrefined, and this gives the image a certain vulnerability. It’s like we're seeing the artist think, directly onto the page. The rabbit, drawn with such simple, almost childlike strokes, becomes a powerful symbol. Note the direct, emotive statement written in English. This piece reminds me a little of the work of Philip Guston, in that he also embraced a kind of intentionally clumsy, honest mark-making. And like Guston, Kakhidze uses this directness to communicate something profound. It's a reminder that art doesn't always have to be polished to be powerful; sometimes, it's the rawness that makes it resonate. It's about the exchange of ideas, a conversation across time and space.
