Curator: The use of typography and page layout directs the eye in interesting ways. Notice the varying fonts and the shift from justification to a centered block. What’s your initial read of this page? Editor: This is "Voorrede - vervolg- en privilege tot de Sinnepoppen", from 1614, by Roemer Visscher at the Rijksmuseum. It seems to be printed on paper, and also incorporates textile somehow, as well as typography, obviously. Initially, it appears dense. The columns of text feel imposing. I'm curious, what elements stand out to you, in terms of composition or layout? Curator: The relationship between the text blocks, both vertically and horizontally, establish a clear hierarchy. The use of larger font sizes and contrasting letter forms draw our attention to the headings. How do you think this guides our understanding? Editor: It really emphasizes certain sections, making the "VOOR-REDEN" and "PRIVILEGIE" stand out. It is quite clever how Visscher visually differentiates the prologue from the legal text using both layout and font. So, are you saying the formal arrangement supports and enhances the contextual information? Curator: Precisely. And if we consider the materiality of the page – the paper, the ink – these elements contribute to the work's meaning. What feeling do the physical aspects convey? Editor: The aged paper and the sharp, defined typography gives it a sense of importance, like it’s presenting something that really mattered at the time. Thank you, this really deepened my appreciation for what typography brings to artwork. Curator: And I now have a clearer view of how hierarchy is perceived through typography. Thanks to you.
