These three photographs of the Gulf of Naples and Villa Tritone were made by Norbert van den Berg sometime around 1950, probably with a simple camera and a love for light. The surface of the print has a subtle texture, like smooth paper, but the images themselves are all about capturing the rougher texture of the water, the foliage, and the buildings on the cliffs. The contrast between light and dark gives the water a shimmering quality, making you feel the spray and movement. Look at how the light catches the waves in the bottom photograph; it's almost like the artist is drawing with the light. There’s something about the way these are presented, almost like a page from a scrapbook, that reminds me of found photography, like the work of Gerhard Richter or John Baldessari, where the act of selection and framing becomes as important as the image itself. Art isn’t just about the single perfect image but the story it tells within a larger context.
