Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this decorative design for an oblong panel with pencil, pen and brush in the early 20th century. It's a rhythmic dance of shapes, almost like musical notation turned visual. I'm drawn to the way Cachet uses the grid as both structure and background. The controlled lines of the design are juxtaposed with the organic, hand-drawn nature of the pattern itself. Look at the central motif, it’s not perfect, but it has a certain wonkiness that gives it character. The muted tones and the overall symmetry lend a sense of calm and order. It reminds me of the work of Hilma af Klint who was also exploring these kinds of symbolic languages, but in a much more abstract way. Both artists tap into the idea of art as a form of communication that goes beyond the literal.
