This book cover design was made by Carel Adolph Lion Cachet. The black ink is laid down over the grid lines. The grid shows you that the artist is trying to order or control something, but the ink looks spontaneous, almost chaotic. I wonder what it was like for Lion Cachet to work with the tension between the grid and the curves? Maybe he felt confined by the grid, but also liberated by the possibilities it offered. The marks build a space of inquiry for the artist and the viewer. There are echoes of art nouveau and Japanese prints in the patterning. Artists are always looking at each other's work and responding. It's an ongoing conversation that stretches back through time. I think the push and pull between freedom and constraint makes it feel alive. Ultimately, that’s where meaning lives in a work.
