This is Robert Frank's 'Hollywood 84,' a photographic work. It's a contact sheet, right, so it’s raw and unedited, full of the artist’s intuitive approach. You can see the process right there. There's a real tactile quality in this work, even though it’s a photograph. Look how the light and shadow play across the images, creating a kind of dance. It’s not about perfection. The images vary in clarity, some are sharp, some blurry, embracing the imperfections and accidents that happen. Notice, in the bottom row, how Frank includes images that are upside down. This creates a sense of disorientation, inviting us to question our own perspective. It's as though Frank is turning the world on its head, inviting us to see things differently. Frank’s work reminds me a bit of Garry Winogrand. Both artists have a knack for capturing life as it unfolds, messy, unpredictable, and full of surprises. And just like a painting, these photographs are about more than what they depict. They’re about how we see, how we feel, and how we make sense of the world around us.
