Editor: Robert Adams’ “Interstate 25, Weld County, Colorado” from 1983. The photograph is, quite stark, even bleak; a tangle of weeds in the foreground with a blurred truck barreling down the highway. What strikes me is the sense of… resignation? What do you read into this landscape? Curator: Resignation, huh? That's interesting. I feel the same desolate mood. Adams, you see, was drawn to these in-between spaces. These liminal zones where nature and human intervention clash—or maybe, co-exist in a weird sort of dance. Editor: Co-exist how? Curator: Well, think of the weeds—persistent life pushing through. Now, the truck; that represents our relentless drive toward…progress? And that sky, washed out, almost featureless, as though drained by what’s below. It makes me think, what are we really doing to this planet? Does that reading feel valid to you? Editor: Absolutely. I hadn't thought about the sky contributing to that feeling, but it definitely adds to the sense of emptiness. It’s not just documenting the landscape; it’s posing a question. Curator: Precisely! Adams wasn’t just clicking a button. He was… meditating with his camera, capturing not just what's there, but what we risk losing in our pursuit of more. And maybe, finding a strange sort of beauty in the forgotten corners. What are you taking away from it all now? Editor: A fresh appreciation for finding beauty, and meaning, in unexpected places. Thanks. Curator: And I feel refreshed, as though reminded to see beyond the easy beauty – which is, for an artist, everything, or nearly.
