Jens Lund made this sculpture, Liggende kvinde, which translates as reclining woman, in an unknown year and with stone, of course. The approach is so direct, no fudging or fiddling! I think of artmaking as a kind of wrestling match. There's an immediacy about the material, a here-I-am-ness that's both assertive and vulnerable. I’m drawn to how the colour and texture works, it's not trying to be anything other than itself, it’s just stone, unapologetically. The surface has these visible marks, like the record of a struggle or a conversation between the artist and the stone. Look at the gesture of the hands resting on the stomach, there’s a weight and substance, a grounding force. Then consider Constantin Brancusi, his reductive forms and pursuit of essence. Like Brancusi, Lund seems to be chasing after something fundamental about the human form. Art isn’t about answers; it’s about the ongoing conversation, the constant questioning, and the beautiful ambiguity of it all.
