Alaa Awad created this mural, called "The Mourners," as part of a larger series of street art in Egypt which blends ancient Egyptian imagery with contemporary themes. Awad’s work emerged in the aftermath of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, a period marked by political upheaval and a yearning for cultural identity. Here, the figures are reminiscent of ancient Egyptian funerary processions, but they appear in a modern urban setting. The mural combines elements of ancient Egyptian art with contemporary street art, creating a visual dialogue between the past and present. Note how Awad uses these figures to reflect on the collective grief and resilience of the Egyptian people. The elongated figures, with their raised hands, evoke a sense of sorrow and collective mourning. This work is a reflection on cultural heritage, as well as a commentary on contemporary Egyptian society, capturing the intersection of history, identity, and social consciousness.
