Iosif Iser made this painting of a seated woman, we think, sometime in the first half of the 20th century. He used a brush, paint, and a canvas, probably in a studio, maybe with her sitting right there in that yellow chair. Look at the muted greens and reds. I wonder if Iser was trying to catch a certain mood? The woman's expression is hard to read, isn't it? I can almost feel him mixing the colours, trying to get the skin tone just right, or the specific shade of red for her beret. There's a beautiful tension between the flatness of the painted surface and the illusion of depth. The table next to her looks like it might tip over! I bet he struggled to get it to balance. Artists always build on what others have done before. We learn from each other across time and place. We experiment, fail, and discover new ways of seeing and feeling. It's this messy process, full of uncertainty, that makes painting such a rich, expressive, and uniquely human endeavor.
