This is a photograph by Lamme, titled 'Portret van prinses Beatrix en prinses Irene', and given the lack of colour it’s safe to assume it’s a monochromatic image. I love the textures on display in this image - the patterned wallpaper behind the girls, the fabric of the chair, and the soft blankets beneath them. You know, photography can be tricky, because it's so close to reality, but really, every choice the photographer makes is a painterly one, deciding what to reveal, and what to leave in shadow. In this image, it's the gentleness of the light that really strikes me. Look how it softens the edges, especially around the baby’s face. It's this kind of attention to detail that elevates the image from a simple portrait to something more tender and intimate. It makes me think of other image makers, maybe someone like Gertrude Käsebier, who also found ways to make photographs feel so warm and human. It's a reminder that art isn't about perfect representation, it's about feeling and interpretation.
