Yui Yaegashi created *GMPC* using oil on canvas. It’s a very simple setup, but that doesn't mean it's simplistic. The impact of this painting depends on the interaction between material and process. Yaegashi's choice of oil paint, traditionally valued for its luminosity and depth, is key. She’s working within a very established painterly language. But with the vertical bands of yellow, orange, and pale gray, the artist sets up an almost mechanical composition, like a color swatch or a minimalist grid. This effect is reinforced by the even texture, no doubt achieved with multiple layers, smoothed over to create a uniform surface. Yet, if you look closely, you'll see slight variations that reveal the hand's presence. Yaegashi shows us that the richest potential resides in the dialogue between concept and execution, intellect and action, and challenges the boundary separating art from design.
