Phil Sims made this ‘Untitled (Yellow)’ painting with what looks like oil or acrylic, building up layers of colour, maybe over several days or even weeks. I feel a sense of kinship with Sims. I know what it’s like to get into the studio and work with a single colour. To find its depths, to explore its possibilities. Like, what does yellow *do*? It's not just about flatness or the monochrome, but about how the materiality of paint can create this immersive experience. Look closely and you'll notice the subtle variations and textures. The light catching the surface. You can feel his hand in it. It’s as though he’s thinking about Rothko or Newman, but making something quiet, intimate, and very much his own. With this work, Sims invites us to slow down, to contemplate, and to really *see*.
