Yui Yaegashi made this untitled work, “color,” with paint on canvas. It's like looking at the DNA of painting itself! I'm struck by the way the colors interact, it's a real process of call and response. I’m curious about her decisions, her particular choices. Are these blocks of color intuitive, or planned? Looking closely, the paint has this chalky, matte quality, and the grid lines aren’t quite perfect. There’s a very human touch; the unevenness is the point, I think. That little wobble in the line, or the slightly lighter patch in one of the blue squares – that’s where the life of the painting is, right? I find myself getting totally absorbed in the subtle variations, the little imperfections. This work reminds me a little of Agnes Martin’s grids. I think this piece suggests that art is more about the conversation than the final answer.
