Terry Frost made "Umea, Sweden" as a print. There's a real sparseness to this piece, isn't there? It's all about the push and pull of basic shapes, almost like a diagram. I think of it as an exercise, like a dancer stretching. Frost's use of simple forms, like the squares and circles, bumping up against each other, makes me think about how we construct our own visual language. The textures here are subtle but important. Look closely, you can see the way the ink sits on the paper, how it's heavier in some spots and lighter in others. That's the beauty of printmaking – the way the medium itself becomes part of the message. Those slightly wobbly circles give a sense of the hand, like they're breathing. This print reminds me a bit of some of Josef Albers’ work, with its focus on geometric forms. Frost is in conversation with abstraction here, but always with that touch of the handmade. Ultimately, this piece feels less about finding definitive answers and more about embracing the questions, the ‘what ifs’ of seeing.
