Terry Frost's "Umea, Sweden" is all about shapes bumping into each other, hanging out in the same space. I imagine Frost starting with those imperfect circles, loose and free, almost like a playful accident. And then, bam! Those solid black diamonds come crashing in, like uninvited guests at a party. What was Frost thinking? Maybe about how different forms can create tension or harmony. The black ink is solid, heavy, like it’s got something to say. The ground is light, like a whisper. Frost's earlier work was super colourful. This one is simple, but there is a clear joy in the relationships between basic forms, like he is trying to find the essence of things. It reminds me a bit of Malevich and his squares, but way more fun. You know, art is just one big conversation. We're all just riffing off each other, trying to figure things out as we go.
