This terracotta fragment of a kylix, or drinking cup, was created by Douris, a celebrated Athenian vase painter and potter of the early Classical period. Fragments such as these allow us to explore the cultural and social contexts in which these objects were produced and used in ancient Greece. Kylixes were not merely functional; they were integral to social rituals like the symposium, an aristocratic drinking party. The imagery on these cups often depicted scenes of daily life, mythology, or even political commentary, reflecting the values and concerns of Athenian society. The imagery on such objects offers insights into Athenian life. By studying vase painting, along with other archaeological and textual evidence, we can better understand the dynamics of ancient Greek culture. We discover how art both mirrored and shaped social norms, and how institutions fostered creativity.
