This brass token, created by Dutch artist Isidore Bessaignet, depicts the Hotel de Oude Doelen in The Hague, which was owned by Pl. Reyman. The token features a depiction of the hotel on one side and a text inscription identifying Pl. Reyman as the innkeeper on the other. This small-scale, octagonal work of art is an example of a "trade token," a type of medal or coin that was used in the 18th and 19th centuries to advertise businesses or institutions. These tokens were often given out to customers or patrons as a form of advertising and a reminder of their patronage.
