This print, "Christen bij een opengeslagen Bijbel," was made by Noach van der Meer II in the 18th century using etching and engraving techniques. The etched lines create a world of light and shadow, defining the figure of a Christian and the objects around him. Note how the artist used the engraver's tools to create a range of textures, from the smooth surface of the open Bible, to the flowing robes of the figure, and the billowing smoke. The printmaking process itself requires a deep understanding of materials, acids, and the mechanics of the printing press. The artist carefully manipulates the metal plate to achieve the desired image. These skills were highly valued in the 18th century and considered distinct from the realm of "high art." Yet, through an understanding of craft and process, we can appreciate the artistry and labor that went into the creation of this print.
