This is a postcard to Willem Bogtman, probably made with pen and ink, but also rubber stamps. You know, there's something about the way handwriting meanders across a surface, filling in pre-ordained lines, that echoes the way I approach a canvas. It’s like a dance between intention and chance. I'm drawn to the stamp in the upper right corner, see how it bleeds into the paper around it? To me, this is where the piece really comes alive. It's a reminder that art isn't just about the clear, crisp image, but also about the smudges and imperfections, the things that happen in the process of making. Thinking about other artists and how they approached the surface, I'm put in mind of Cy Twombly, another lover of the scrawl. So much of art is just this ongoing conversation, picking up where someone else left off, and adding your own little scribble to the mix.
