This is the back of a postcard addressed to Willem Bogtman, written by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst at an unknown date, it’s a little snapshot of history. The material itself tells a story. The smooth, off-white card, printed with 'BRIEFKAART' in a light brown, feels almost like a canvas waiting for a painting, which is sort of is, in a way. The handwriting, looping and leaning, adds a personal touch. You can imagine the writer pausing, pen in hand, thinking about the person on the other end. The stamp, smudged and official, is a tiny, detailed artwork in itself. There's a certain beauty in these everyday objects, the way they connect us to the past and to each other. They remind me a bit of On Kawara's date paintings, capturing a specific moment in time. It’s a reminder that art is everywhere, not just on canvas. It’s in the act of communication, the traces we leave behind, the stories we tell, and the simple act of sending a postcard.
