Editor: This is Joseph Pennell’s “Wear Giffard.” What strikes me is how the sinuous lines create depth, pulling you into the landscape. What do you make of the composition? Curator: The network of lines and the contrasts in value establish the rhythm and harmony of the scene. Notice how the composition leads the eye along the river's path, a deliberate manipulation of form for aesthetic effect. The texture and density seem to vary. Does this change the way we percieve the work? Editor: I see that, yes. It's lighter in the background compared to the foreground trees. It does make it more engaging. Curator: Precisely. This manipulation of texture, line, and value is what makes Pennell's image formally compelling. Editor: Thank you, I hadn't considered those relationships.
