Katsuhito Nishikawa made this spherical vessel, probably sometime in the 21st century. There's a quietness to it, a stillness that comes from its smooth, unbroken surface, and an overall tone that suggests the artist is most interested in form. The lack of visible brushstrokes or tool marks gives it a kind of anonymity, a universal quality. You can see the texture on the outside, though, and maybe it's made of plaster or clay, something simple and direct. That one tiny hole at the top feels significant. Like it’s offering a way to see inside, or maybe let something out. It reminds me of the work of Giorgio Morandi, who also had a knack for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, and whose muted palettes and subtle forms also invite contemplation and reflection. For me, this piece is less about what it is, and more about what it makes you feel. It's about how something simple can hold so much space.
