Valerie Jaudon made 'Accomplice' with pattern and layering, so we see something a little dizzying. It's an image that looks like it's still in process somehow. The way Jaudon uses black and white areas and geometric shapes is like she's building something. There's so much happening with figure-ground relationships. Are we looking at superimposed shapes or a woven structure? I see a resemblance to the work of Dorothea Rockburne, who also uses geometric forms and layering in her drawings. Both artists share an interest in creating complex spatial relationships through simple means. But look again at the way one shape becomes another. It has an ongoing, generative feeling, as though it could keep growing. That openness to change and reinterpretation is what makes the piece so dynamic.
