Editor: We're looking at Josef Hoffmann's textile design, "Eagle," from the Harvard Art Museums. It’s a small, patterned piece, mostly black and white. The repetition makes me think of something both modern and ancient—what do you see in it? Curator: Oh, it’s a rhythmic dance, isn't it? Hoffmann was all about geometry and clean lines. I see a stylized bird, yes, but also, more importantly, the promise of the Machine Age. Does it feel cold or calming to you? Editor: Calming, I think. Though, the stark contrast does add some intensity. I never would have seen a machine reference. Curator: Precisely! Hoffmann wove his dreams of a new world into everyday objects. It's a tiny revolution, wouldn't you say? Editor: Definitely gives me a fresh perspective. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure! It always makes me rethink the whole thing.
