Harrie Gerritz created this etching titled "Boomgaard" in 1976. Here, a gate stands before us, an archetypal symbol marking the threshold between worlds. Since ancient times, gates have represented transitions, boundaries, and the passage from one state to another, be it physical or spiritual. Think of Janus, the Roman god of doorways and beginnings, whose two faces guard the passage of time itself. The gate reminds me of how, in our collective unconscious, this humble structure becomes loaded with meaning. The gate—at once an invitation and a barrier— speaks to our deepest desires and fears of the unknown. It is a potent image, charged with the energy of our shared past.
