Harrie Gerritz made this print, Anonieme architectuur in onleesbare lucht, using etching, a process I really admire because it's all about controlled accidents. Look at the lines: the way they build up the form of the architecture, then dissolve into these wispy lines suggesting the sky. It’s like the structure is breathing, or maybe dissolving. The texture is wonderful: from that dense, velvety dark area at the bottom to the open, airy top half. The hatching feels both precise and intuitive; like Gerritz is thinking and feeling his way through the image at the same time. I'm reminded of the way Agnes Martin used lines to create these shimmering, barely-there grids. Both artists seem interested in the space between seeing and feeling, the way an image can be both solid and ephemeral. It’s a quiet piece, but there’s a lot going on beneath the surface.
