Harrie Gerritz made this piece, "Landschap met blauwe grens", with what looks like pencil and paint, and the process is so clear to see. There's this blue stripe dividing the paper, really direct, and on either side, these cows grazing. The pencil work is delicate, almost hesitant, and that blue stripe is so assertive, so flat. It makes me think about how we frame our world, how we decide what's in and what's out. The texture of the paper peeks through, giving it a raw, unfinished feel, like a sketch, but the composition feels so deliberate. Look at the way the cows are placed, almost mirroring each other, but not quite. Gerritz's work reminds me a bit of Agnes Martin, that same quiet simplicity, but with a touch of humor. It’s a reminder that art doesn't always need to shout to be heard; sometimes, the most profound statements are whispered.
