This is an anonymous design for wall decoration with doors, made on a sheet with pencil, pen and gray ink, and gray wash. The artwork is structured by a tall, narrow frame, and doors are to be placed on either side. The composition is divided into two distinct halves, with the left side featuring intricate ornamentation, and the right side showing a preliminary sketch. The contrast between the detailed left side and the spare right side invites contemplation about the role of detail. The ornamentation, with its elaborate curves and flourishes, might reflect a cultural obsession with opulence, whilst the incomplete side reveals the structural elements underpinning the decorative scheme.
