Herbert Lawrence Block, better known as Herblock, was an American editorial cartoonist. His work, such as this 1957 cartoon, was often satirical and critical of politics. "What is 'Modern', Anyhow?" depicts two men, one a large elephant with a human face, the other a man with a shocked expression, standing in front of an "Exhibition of MODERN REPUBLICANISM". Herblock's use of caricature and symbolism creates a humorous commentary on modern art and political movements, which can be viewed as a criticism of the Republican Party at that time. The artwork has a unique style that utilizes shading, textures, and detailed linework, which further contributes to the humorous and critical narrative.
