Johann Sadeler I created this engraving, “Wijsheid (Sapientia) overwint Menselijke Verbijstering (Caligo Humana)”, sometime between 1550 and 1601, now held at the Rijksmuseum. The composition is dominated by the figure of Sapientia, or Wisdom, enthroned above Caligo Humana, representing human ignorance. The stark contrast between light and shadow, achieved through fine, precise lines, accentuates the tension between knowledge and obscurity. The artist’s approach uses symbolic elements arranged within a strict hierarchical structure. Sapientia holds a mirror with entwined snakes, a symbol of prudence, while a dove hovers above her head. The book she holds open displays fragmented words, hinting at the piecemeal nature of learning. Beneath her, Caligo Humana is cast in shadow, her eyes covered, symbolizing a lack of insight. This work can be understood through a semiotic lens. The objects and figures are not merely representational, but function as signs within a complex cultural and philosophical discourse. It explores the interplay between knowledge and ignorance, suggesting that wisdom triumphs over human fallibility through reason and enlightenment.
