Lucas van Leyden created this engraving of the apostle Matthias in the Netherlands during the early 16th century. Van Leyden was a central figure in the Northern Renaissance, a period marked by religious reform and burgeoning humanism. Here, Matthias is depicted as a solitary, almost melancholic figure. The soft lines etched around his eyes and mouth suggest a man of deep thought and perhaps, some weariness. Note the presence of the axe, the instrument of his martyrdom, which he carries with a gentle, reverent grip. It is a striking choice. It is worth remembering that Matthias was chosen to replace Judas Iscariot after Judas betrayed Jesus. Matthias’ identity is thus inextricably linked to themes of duty, sacrifice, and divine selection. Van Leyden’s Matthias is not just a religious icon; he is a symbol of the personal and collective burdens carried in service of faith.
